Rina Khatrapal
Rina joined Poultry Development Services in 2015 and her story is typical of so many of the women we work with. Her husband can only find work as an agricultural labourer in the fields belonging to local farmers. His income is about 100 rupees a day – or about £1.20. He helps during the planting season and with the harvest, usually getting work for about 250 days per year. His income amounts to about £300 per year – well below the internationally recognised poverty line. So Rina was very keen to hear about PDS when we set up a community awareness meeting in her village. Her key motivation was to earn some extra money to spend on educating her two teenage children. Her chicken farming enterprise worked well and she has now joined our goat programme too. She told us their annual household income has risen to about £420 – a 40% increase.
