Nirdhan’s Annual Day Celebrations

Tomorrow, 23rd August, marks the 6th anniversary of the foundation of our organisation in India, Nirdhan.  To mark the occasion the directors are hosting an evening reception to showcase the work we are doing in the rural villages of Bengal, helping families lift themselves out of poverty.

There will be 120 guests at the event – local dignitaries, business people, celebrities and other supporters – which includes a presentation of our operations plus first hand accounts from some of our farmers, including Kalyani, one of our featured farmers – click here to take a look.

It promises to be a wonderful and entertaining evening with music and dance and some traditional food and snacks, including momos, Tibetan dumplings which are hugely popular in Bengal and have become ubiquitous across India.

Here at Shivia in the UK we are particularly excited about the event as it also marks the start of Nirdhan’s fundraising activities within India and new chapter for the team in Kolkata. We are extremely proud of all the hard work they have put into organising this event and wish them every success.

Olly is currently on her way to Kolkata to represent Shivia and support Nirdhan tomorrow evening and will report back later this week when she returns  to London with all the news, stories and photos.

We have updated our short video for Nirdhan to show to the guests at the event.  It has all the current facts and figures from our livelihood programmes.  Take a look here…

  • Shivia was a natural project for TFN to support: a strong social change mission, with a local focus providing a hand up, not a hand out to the women and communities it works with.
    Karen Millen
UK Operations Manager, The Funding Network
  • We were thrilled to see the impact of the work being done and to meet the team on the ground. It was truly humbling to see the difference being made to so many people by this group of highly motivated and capable people.
    Stewart Brown
    Director Artemis Investment Management LLP
  • We are excited to support such a strategically-minded and professionally run charity that is making a real and sustainable difference. The focus and design of the livelihood programmes are simple and highly effective – and the results speak for themselves.
    Lars-eric Roden
    Director, The T&J Meyer Foundation
  • Farming is my only source of income... I registered with Shivia to learn how to reduce my farming expenses and produce better quality outputs. I am definitely seeing good results compared to previous years and have learned how to make bio-pesticides.

  • I cannot thank Shivia enough for giving me this opportunity. I am extremely happy that your team held my hand and provided me with excellent training to understand about raising chickens and earning money from them. I now have the confidence to carry on with my poultry enterprise on my own.
