Nick Jenkins: patron

Appointment date: April 2015

After reading Russian at University he spent eight years working as a commodity trader in Moscow before returning to the UK in 1998 to study for an MBA at Cranfield University. Immediately after graduating Nick set up the online greeting retail business Moonpig.com which by 2011 had over four million customers worldwide. Since 2008 Nick has been actively investing in other start-up businesses, mostly in the educational technology and internet retail space, as well as being one of the Dragons on the BBC’s Dragon’s Den. From 2012 until 2016 Nick sat on the investment committee of Impact Ventures UK, an investment fund which invests in social enterprises using innovation to find better solutions to social issues in the UK. From 2012 to 2016 Nick was a trustee of the international educational charity Ark. Since 2015 Nick has been a Trustee of Operation Fistula which aims to improve access to surgery for women suffering from untreated obstetric fistulae.

I am delighted to be the patron of Shivia. I wholeheartedly support the approach that people should be given the tools to help themselves out of poverty. Through years of practical experience Shivia has developed a really robust livelihood development programme which is making a significant difference to the quality of life of families in West Bengal.

  • Farming is my only source of income... I registered with Shivia to learn how to reduce my farming expenses and produce better quality outputs. I am definitely seeing good results compared to previous years and have learned how to make bio-pesticides.
