Poultry Farmer
(SHANTI)Shanti lives in the Nayagarh District in Odisha with her husband and two children. Like many of the tribal castes in this area, Shanti and her husband rely on daily wage labour for their income, living on about £200 a year. This means the family is very vulnerable and food security is a real issue for them. Which is why when we met Shanti in May 2022 she was so happy to start poultry farming.
She soon embarked on the training programme and started to build her coop under the guidance of our field team, using the secure netting we provided and other natural materials she could source locally. Then the rest of the toolkit arrived – ten chicks, vaccine, medication and a bag of chick feed.
A couple of months later, Shanti had a small flock of fully grown chickens for sale and Rs 2400 in her hand for the first time in her life!
She told us that she intended to spend her new income on helping with her daughter’s education and then she would re-invest back into her new enterprise with another toolkit.
