Laxmi
Laxmi started her chicken farming enterprise with Shivia in 2014. This is her story…
The family depended on Laxmi’s husband Soilen for their income. He owned a small van which he used for deliveries but when this broke down they could not afford to repair it and his income soon dried up. Laxmi began earning a few rupees from pulling the copper wires from old car tyres – a time consuming and laborious job – but it was not enough to support the family and pay for the basic household expenses. The children stopped going to school as they could not even afford the few rupees needed for the bus fare. Then Laxmi heard about Poultry Development Services and registered for her first toolkit and training. With the money she started earning from the sale of chickens and eggs they were able to mend the van and Soilen started working again. The children are now back at school and there is some spare cash to pay for a few medicines for Laxmi’s sick mother-in-law. She is also pleased that she no longer needs to pull the copper wires from tyres to earn money.
