A salute to our wonderful women farmers…

On International Women’s Day (IWD) we are saluting the thousands of wonderful women who we have had the privilege to work with at Shivia.

Back in 2011, we launched our livelihood programmes in West Bengal with Poultry Development Services (PDS).  The programme was specifically designed to support women as we recognised the particular circumstances affecting them in the the rural villages near Kolkata – lack of education and public services; lives dominated by gruelling domestic work and child rearing; opportunities to earn denied due to cultural practices that keep women subjugated.

With PDS we want to give these women the chance to take control of their own lives, earn their own money and make spending decisions. Research shows that when women are economically empowered the whole family benefits.

So, to all our women farmers and to the women in our team on the ground in West Bengal, and to women the world over who work tirelessly to care for their families before themselves, we admire and salute you.

Shivia’s work is aligned to a number of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Goal 5: Gender Equality is a big priority for us. Click below to read more about IWD from our friends at #TOGETHERBAND

  • Agri-management Services has the capacity to deliver lasting change for our farmers. I have always felt that the farmers feed our nation while they can hardly afford to feed themselves. What an irony. So if my team and I are able to help farmers earn a sustainable income through agriculture, there’s nothing better than this.
