HADIANI
(Poultry Farmer)
Chickens are often referred to as the ATM of the poor and Hadiani’s story illustrates this perfectly. When her husband suffered from liver failure, she sold their small plot of land and took a loan from a local moneylender to pay for his treatment but he passed away leaving her to care for their three children alone.
Hadiani worked as a daily wage labourer but could not earn a regular enough income to support the family. She resorted to moving away from her village to work in a biscuit factory and finally paid off the interest on the loan. Happily, she is now back home again and running her own small chicken farming enterprise thanks to Poultry Development Services. She has invested in a total of seven toolkits, sold over 56 birds and earned Rs. 16,300 (c. £155) so far. She is covering all her household expenses and using some of her income to support her children’s further education. She is very pleased with how her fortunes have changed and her smile in the photo is testament to that!
